Sage General Store

On Thursday, September 6 2012, I decided to visit this famed store in Queens. It was made famous on the television show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives as a hot spot in Queens. I was excited to go because it was something close to where I currently live. So, I took my 13 year old son and we went to this well known local restaurant.

When we arrived to the area that the store was located in, we noticed that the store was hard to find. If your not looking carefully and are not from the neighborhood you can and will miss the store. Not to mention, the parking was horrendous, mostly because there are office buildings, a major through-way and tons of one way streets.

After parking about four blocks away, we found the store. It was a little disappointing at first sight because as a New Yorker, we are used to flash and dash, neon lights, huge awnings and a alluring appeal pouring from the walls. This was a plain establishment but good food is good food, no matter the size, shape or popularity.

We went in, got seated right away and was given a menu. Of course being a sweet eater, the first thing I noticed was the fresh baked goods lining the counter. They looked good and had that homemade appeal. Then I noticed the wood burning oven. Those types of ovens are rare in restaurants. You'll see some in old school pizzerias  but still a rare thing. They do make some of the best, crispy and moist food ever.

I was intrigued to see the delectable's they had to offer. The menu was one page and had little to offer. Upon inquiry, the waitress told me that the lunch menu is more extensive than the dinner menu. The options on the dinner menu sounded okay but didn't wow me.
We ended up leaving early because I didn't want anything on the menu and being that I was with my son there wasn't anything for him to eat that he would like.

The Sage General Store appeals to the locals in the area. It has a neighborhood staple appeal. I'm not sure if people would come from far and wide to eat there.

Would I go back? No, Would I recommend this? Maybe if you were in the area.
